Summary

This job involves working as a technician in a U.S.

Coast Guard academy lab, maintaining equipment and software for naval architecture and marine engineering, and helping professors guide students through hands-on experiments with boats and systems.

Full Job Description

This vacancy is for a GS - 0802 - 11, Engineering Technician - Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, CG ACADEMY ACADEMICS DIVISION.

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 grade level in the federal sector.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience must include some of the following: Boat design/analysis/repair/construction, marine systems, electrical or mechanical systems, Computer-Aided Design software, 3D printers, electronics/software, instrumentation, experimentation.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents.

Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: Apprentice Engineer who created and analyzed designs for prototyping or production purposes.

Marine experimental facility technician or model maker who performed design or testing work on devices fabricated. CNC operator or mechanic assisting in building engineering components or systems.

Teaching at High School or College level in STEM fields.

OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, physics, computer aided design, machining and manufacturing, physical sciences, or mathematics.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Major Duties:

You will serve as an Engineering Technician and be responsible for the equipment, facilities, and computer software associated with the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department's laboratory facilities.

You will also assist faculty members with the preparation and execution of various laboratory student exercises including oversight of student work.

The mission of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department is to ensure that graduates possess the engineering expertise associated with design, construction, operations and repair of Coast Guard, and commercial vessels.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: Purchasing, assembling, installing, and operating equipment, instrumentation, software, and other apparatus in classroom or laboratories in support of instructional and research activities.

Assisting faculty in setting up equipment and material for experiments laboratory exercises, demonstrations, and assisting students during these activities.

Maintaining, modifying, calibrating and repairing lab equipment. Procuring, receiving, and maintaining adequate stock of materials and supplies for teaching and research purposes.

Coordinating and implementing program safety strategy and policies.
