Student Trainee II $20.00 hourly


This is a paid temporary /intern position limited to a maximum of 9 months from the date of hire. In addition to being a fantastic place to work, CDOT offers all temporary employees paid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 48 hours.


Schedule: Primarily 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM work hours, Monday through Friday in the R2 North Engineering Program.

This position is not covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

Requirements

About the Position

The Region 2 Engineering Program is currently hiring two (2) Engineering Interns to support a variety of transportation projects.

This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience, learning from experienced professionals, and contributing to meaningful work that impacts communities throughout Region 2.

The Region 2 Engineering Program provides engineering expertise in developing, building, and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system.

The unit manages and oversees projects for upgrading, reconstructing, and maintaining the highway system, including projects funded through federal, state, and local sources.

Core functions include design, oversight of design, NEPA documentation, consultant and construction management, and overall project management.

Major duties and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with traffic control safety inspections by driving through work zones to identify unsafe conditions or anomalies and learning work zone standards in accordance with MUTCD, M&S Standards, and project documents.
  • Support erosion control efforts by measuring quantities for various pay items and reviewing installations to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Assist with construction management activities, including observing material placement, measuring quantities, and reviewing installations for conformance with plans, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including recording field observations in accordance with CDOT Construction Manual, Standard Specifications, project special provisions, and Region 2 procedures.
  • Participate in on-the-job safety training and other training directly related to assigned duties.
  • Observe installation and removal of traffic control devices, including advanced warning signage, in accordance with applicable procedures and safety standards.
  • Operate a CDOT vehicle to travel to project sites throughout Region 2 (valid driver’s license required during employment).

Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM work hours, Monday through Friday
  • The typical work week will be 40 hours a week in the summer months (May through August) with an option to continue part-time through December or January if the intern is local.

    An hour orientation is planned to start paperwork early in May with full-time employment and start date coordinating with any classes and finals that need to be completed.

  • Occasional travel may be required during work hours to assigned locations to collect data.
  • Potential overnight travel may be required but is not likely. This would be for inspection trips and would be no longer than two nights once or twice during the summer.
  • May be required to operate CDOT vehicles.
  • Must have current driver’s license.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be either:

  • Any college student enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or similar.

OR

  • A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with and Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or similar within three calendar years.

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application.

Transcripts must show the name of the school, completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred.

Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.

The credential evaluation report must be an official report.

Failure to provide a transcript or official foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point etc.) and experience with Google Applications and Gmail; and
