This job involves assisting with the design and planning of highways, airports, and related infrastructure like storm drains, roads, and traffic systems for federally funded projects in Alaska's transportation department.
It starts at an entry level with training and can advance to leading designs, all under the supervision of a professional engineer.

Work includes assisting with the preparation of engineering studies, development of various details and portions of projects and assisting with the preparation of contract documents (Engineering calculations, Plans, Specifications and Estimates).
Engineering Assistant 2:
You will perform mid-level engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer.
Work includes assisting in the research, development and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates and other engineering documents.
Engineering Assistant 3:You will lead the engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer.
Work includes developing initial concept-level designs, vetting concept designs with the public and resource agencies for input, and finally producing construction-ready project plans, specifications, quantities, estimates, and engineering documents.
Typically, this position is the lead designer on projects with low to mid-level complexity and assists as a specialist on complex projects.

This vacancy may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, or Engineering Assistant 2, or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience.
The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at.
If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
