Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as an engineer or scientist to design, develop, and integrate advanced combat systems for submarines, including researching new technologies and managing project risks.

It supports undersea warfare projects at a naval facility in Rhode Island.

A good fit would be someone with experience in engineering or computer science who enjoys technical problem-solving and mentoring others in complex defense systems.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electronics engineering, computer science, or related field (basic requirements per OPM standards)
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9/11 (ND-3) applying engineering or computer science principles to undersea warfare combat systems design, development, and integration
  • For higher level (ND-05): Experience equivalent to GS-12/13 (ND-4) defining, organizing, or directing engineering processes for combat systems projects
  • Knowledge of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware for submarine applications
  • Ability to analyze system interfaces, research new technologies, and develop risk mitigation plans
  • Experience overseeing environmental testing, deviation requests, and mentoring junior professionals

You will serve as an ENGINEER OR SCIENTIST in the UNDERSEAS COMBAT SYS REQUIREMENTS & ANALYSIS BR (COD 2511) of NAVUNSEAWARCENDIV NEWPORT RI.

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled by a Mechanical Engineer (0830-series), a Computer Engineer (0854-series), an Electronics Engineer (0855-series),or a Computer Scientist (1550-series) depending upon the qualifications of the candidate.

ND-05 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the ND-4 pay band (GS-12 through GS-13 equivalency) in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer or scientist applying advanced theories, principles, concepts, standards, and methods of engineering, or computer science to define, organize, or direct engineering processes and project efforts related to Undersea Warfare Combat Systems design, development, and integration.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will mentor new professionals in the techniques required to design and integrate complex Submarine Combat Systems
  • You will utilize knowledge of of Commercial Off the Shelf hardware for use in Submarine Combat Systems
  • You support the development of project risks and associated mitigation plans.
  • You will oversee Environmental Test Witness and deviation requests.
  • You will research the utilization of new technologies to meet future submarine mission requirements.
  • You will analyze system interfaces for new technology for utilization and upgrades of submarine Combat Systems for new payloads.
