Job Description

Summary

This entry-level engineering role in Baltimore County's Sewer Design section involves helping design and manage improvements to the county's sewer systems, such as assessing project feasibility, creating plans, and working with teams on construction estimates and permits.

You'll collaborate with engineers, consultants, and community members to resolve issues and ensure projects run smoothly.

It's a good fit for recent engineering graduates or those with an Engineer-in-Training certification who are eager to gain hands-on experience in public infrastructure under supervision.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Possession of a certificate of registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) issued by a U.S. state
  • Ability to perform routine professional engineering tasks under close supervision
  • Experience or coursework in civil, environmental, or mechanical engineering (preferred)
  • Proficiency in GIS work and computer-aided drafting and design (CADD)
  • Valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial Class C Maryland driver's license (may be required)
  • Submission of transcripts, licenses, or certifications with application

Full Job Description

Pay Schedule I, Grade 27, Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works: Engineering and Construction, Sewer Design Section.

Requirements

Under close supervision, performs routine professional engineering work under the guidance of a licensed engineer, work included but not limited to the following:

  • Improves the engineered infrastructure for Baltimore County working with teams of engineers in the Sewer Design section.
  • Assists in the feasibility assessment, design, technical review and project management of capital sanitary sewer engineering projects, including the drafting and reviewing of plans, determination of right-of-way requirements, writing of special provisions, preparation of construction estimates, review of consultant design plans, and grading plans
  • Assists in the performance of GIS work and computer-aided drafting and design of engineering drawings, plans, and projects.
  • Assists in the preparation of engineering reports and technical studies.
  • Prepares, submits, and/or assists consultants with applications for various permits required for capital improvement projects.
  • Participates in meetings with consultants, contractors, suppliers, citizens, and others. Prepares correspondence related to projects.
  • Meets with field personnel on-site.
  • Works with citizens and community groups to resolve complaints concerning sewer projects

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering,

OR

Possession of a certificate of registration as an Engineer in Training issued by a State within the United States of America.

Preferred Qualifications:
College coursework, internships, and/or work experience in civil, environmental, or mechanical engineering.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license may be required for some positions at the time of appointment.
