Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading engineering projects to model and simulate how underwater explosions affect Navy ships and components, developing ways to make them more resistant to damage.

It requires working on a team to create new technologies and training junior engineers in shock analysis techniques.

A good fit would be an experienced engineer with a background in mechanical or general engineering, passionate about naval defense and simulation tools.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12/ND-4 in leading shock modeling and simulation programs
  • Expertise in underwater explosions modeling and simulations
  • Experience researching and developing new modeling approaches for hardening Navy platforms
  • Professional engineering background in General Engineering (0801-series) or Mechanical Engineering (0830-series)
  • Ability to lead complex technical projects and provide advice to senior Navy management
  • Skills in developing shock qualification methodologies and data analysis techniques
  • Demonstrated collaboration on team projects and mentoring junior engineers

Full Job Description

You will serve as an ENGINEER in the Survivability and Weapons Effects Division of CARDEROCK DIV NS.

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled by a General (0801-series) or a Mechanical (0830-series) Engineer depending upon the qualifications of the candidate.

Applicants in positions with occupational series other than those listed (0801 and 0830) may apply; however, you must apply directly to the series listed in this vacancy that is most applicable to your qualifications.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-4 pay band (GS-12 and GS-13 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector: as a professional engineer leading the technical development for a major shock modeling and simulation program; working with underwater explosions modeling and simulations; researching and developing new modeling and simulation approaches and collaborating on a team project to harden U.S Navy platforms against underwater explosions.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will lead planning and direct execution for large, complex shock modeling and simulation efforts.
  • You will develop, implement, and transition new technologies involving modeling and simulation strategies that improve the ability of ship, components, and personnel to resist the damaging effects of an underwater weapon attack.
  • You will develop, implement, and transition new shock qualification methodologies, acceptance criteria, and strategies for which transient shock analysis is a key element.
  • You will develop and implement shock data analysis techniques and tools.
  • You will defend technical approaches and findings throughout the course of a given task and coordinate technical recommendations through the NAVSEA Technical Warrant Holders and DOT and E oversight.
  • You will provide technical advice to coworkers, top level Navy management and other technical experts in the field.
  • You will formulate research and development work proposals and solicit resources from current and prospective sponsors.
  • You will develop and implement an overarching plan to train and mentor junior engineers to develop and maintain a pipeline of capable people in assigned knowledge areas.
  • You will support the technical authority in development and enforcement of shock requirements and policies.
