Full Job Description

The Emergency Management Specialist will perform a wide range of consultative, coordinative, developmental, planning, and evaluative duties in preparing, implementing and maintaining emergency plans, response operations, relief, recovery, mitigation, and preparedness programs; and perform related work as required.



This is a paid internship ($21 per hour) for the 2026 Summer semester. Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university degree program (undergraduate or graduate) for the full duration of the internship or a recent 2025/26 college graduate. Proof of enrollment required.

Job Description

The Emergency Management Intern will assist the Office of Emergency Management in a wide range of duties, including coordinative, developmental, planning, and evaluative duties in preparing, implementing, and maintaining emergency plans, response operations, relief, recovery, mitigation, and preparedness programs; and perform related work as required.

Essential Duties
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating communication between county agencies, local jurisdictions, state and federal partners, private sector organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the development and review of grant applications, and assist with grant management and reporting tasks.
  • Aid in the implementation and oversight of state and federally mandated emergency management programs.
  • Participate in the research, development, and maintenance of disaster emergency response and preparedness plans.
  • Provide support during emergency and disaster response operations, as needed.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of short-term and long-term recovery initiatives following disaster events.
  • Help monitor and communicate weather conditions using various weather tracking tools and systems.
Hourly Rate
Pay rate for this position is
$21 per hour.

  • Internship is in-person. Intern must report to the office of Emergency Management in Lawrenceville, GA.
  • Government-issued Identification from state of residency.
  • This job is a civilian position in a public safety department. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, a public safety background check and fingerprinting are required.

The Gwinnett County Office of Emergency Management is the coordinating authority of the Emergency Management Program for Gwinnett County. This involves planning for emergencies and disasters, responding to incidents as a coordinating agency, directing mitigation against hazards, and assisting Gwinnett County Government and its residents in recovery after an incident. The Office of Emergency Management works very closely with all departments, agencies, operating units, administration, and neighboring jurisdictions. In 2020 the Office of Emergency Management was granted accreditation by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program, the first county in the state of Georgia to achieve this prestigious honor.
