Full Job Description

Under general supervision, to assemble, install, replace, repair, test and perform or assist in the performance of construction inspection of traffic signal lighting and related electrical/electronic systems and equipment; to maintain and repair electrical systems on department facilities.


Requirements

Performs bench repair and maintenance on various types of traffic signal systems; lighting systems, and other electrical/electronic systems; Performs maintenance in the field to signal poles and signal heads, traffic signal systems, street light poles and luminaries, airport beacons, pump station equipment, motor controls, control circuitry for various facilities equipment and lighting systems; Implements and adjusts general signal timing and parameters for signal synchronization and coordination programming; Maintains manual and computerized records of traffic signal equipment, maintenance and intersection signalization timing and monitoring records; Operates shop test equipment; Reads and interprets schematics, construction plans, diagrams, drawings specifications and maintenance manuals; Assists in the inspection of major electrical construction projects; May independently perform construction inspection of simple projects; May guide the work of lower level technicians and assistants on assigned projects; Prepares documentation of work and inspections performed; Installs and maintains underground and aerial electrical systems; Isolates problems by circuit analysis; Investigates complaints and reports of traffic signal malfunctions; May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required; Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications Sufficient education, training and experience, which demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed.Training and Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities to perform this function are attained through the possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and training and experience equivalent to completion of an electrical apprenticeship program, or three (3) years experience as an Electrical/Electronic Assistant with Santa Clara County with demonstrated ability in troubleshooting live field electrical circuits, lighting circuits and basic motor controls, and installing indoor/outdoor conduits and wiring.

Possession of a valid California Drivers license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Drivers Permit.Possession of a California Class B Drivers license with an air brake endorsement within 6 months of employment or vacate the position.Knowledge of:Theory and principles of electrical and electronic equipment and circuits; Theory, principles and procedures used in construction inspection; Tools and equipment used in the testing and repair of electrical and electronic equipment and installations; Methods and procedures used to operate, repair and maintain traffic signal and lighting systems and various electronic control systems; Laws, ordinances and regulations governing electrical construction; Occupational hazards and safety precautions.Ability to: Read and interpret plans, specifications, blue prints, schematics, and maintenance manuals; Test and repair electrical and electronic equipment and installations; Prepare comprehensive reports of work performed or inspected; Perform a variety of manual tasks in all weather conditions and in close proximity to moving traffic; Follow oral and written directions; Work at elevated locations with aerial equipment on towers exceeding 50 feet in height and in confined spaces; Perform electrical/electronic circuit analysis to identify and correct problems; Establish and maintain effective relations with those encountered in the day-to-day performance of tasks.Special Requirement:Willingness to work odd and irregular hours; be subject to call 24 hours a day.
