Job Description

Summary

This entry-level job involves helping maintain and repair traffic signals, street lights, and related electrical systems for the city's roads department, including tasks like replacing bulbs, using tools, and assisting with inspections.

Full Job Description

Under supervision, to perform limited duties in the repair and maintenance of traffic signal and lighting systems, and to assist Electrical/Electronic Technicians in electrical and electronic repair work.

EXAMINATION DATES: Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take an online written examination tentatively scheduled for the week of March 9, 2026. Qualifying candidates will be notified with examination instructions.


Requirements

Replaces lamps in traffic signals, safety lights and street lights; Assists in the assembly, replacement, repair, and testing of traffic signals, lighting systems and related equipment; Performs routine maintenance and repair on electrical and electronic components; Assists in the inspection of electrical construction; Keeps accurate daily records of work performed; Operates power and hand tools and basic shop equipment; Installs and retrieves traffic counters on County roadways; Installs, finishes, and repairs concrete foundations and slabs; May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required; Operates aerial equipment, jack hammer, trenching and other underground construction equipment; Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications Sufficient education, training and experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the above tasks and Possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.Training and Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities to perform this function are attained through the possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of vocational training or apprenticeship in the electrical field, or four (4) semester college level courses in the electrical field or equivalent.Possession of a valid California Driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's permit.Possession of California Class B Driver's license with an air brake endorsement within six (6) months of employment or vacate the position.Knowledge of:Tools and equipment used in electrical and electronic repair and maintenance; Basic electrical and electronic theory; Tools and equipment used in electrical construction work; Principles and practices in electrical/electronic repair; Occupational hazards and safety precautions.Ability to: Read and interpret laws and regulations pertaining to work; Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, construction drawings and specifications; Prepare reports; Follow oral and written directions; Perform a variety of manual tasks in all weather conditions and in close proximity to moving traffic; Operate construction equipment (aerial equipment, saws, jackhammers, etc.); Install and finish concrete; Maintain cooperative working relationships with those encountered in the day-to-day performance of tasks.
