Summary

This job involves helping run elections by preparing materials, recruiting and training volunteers, handling ballots, and assisting voters in person or by mail, all under the guidance of experienced staff.

It's a temporary extra-help role for the City of Santa Clara's Registrar of Voters office.

A good fit would be someone reliable and organized who enjoys public interaction and has basic office skills, like recent high school graduates or those with customer service experience.

Full Job Description

Under supervision of permanent Registrar of Voters' staff, to prepare election materials, recruit volunteers, support election functions, and perform related tasks as required.

This recruitment is to establish an Extra-Help eligible list for the Registrar of Voters.

Requirements

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

Coordinates with locations that serve as, voting locations, training sites, logistics centers, ballot drop-off sites, and other election related sites; Recruits and trains Election Volunteers; Prepares, distributes, and picks up supplies for voting locations, outreach events, training classes, and other election events; May drive vehicles to outreach events, training classes, and to pick-up and deliver ballots and election supplies; Processes voted ballots, including opening and flattening, damaged ballot duplication, sorting, manual ballot tallying, and machine tabulation; Sorts, batches, and prepares voter registration forms and other election-related documents for data entry and processing; Scans materials in-to tracking system, packages and prepares materials for storage, and moves and stages materials at each step of the process; Answers inquiries and provides information to the public about elections and voter registration; Enters voter registration and election information into the election management information system and looks up information as needed; Participates in voter education and outreach events;  Prepares, verifies, and processes Vote by Mail and Provisional Ballots; Prepares, verifies, and processes Petitions, including nominations, initiatives, and recall petitions;  Issues ballots to qualified voters in person and by mail;  May offer orientation or answer procedural questions; May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required; Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to possession of a high school diploma,andOne (1) year of full-time equivalent work experience.Special Requirements Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work.

If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.Knowledge of: Office practices and procedures, including filing systems, financial record keeping, reference sources and preparation of correspondence and reports;  English vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style/format;  Customer service principles, including the handling of irate and distressed people;  Computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet and/or database;  Basic mathematics to perform simple calculations and compile statistical reports; Telephone procedures and etiquette.Ability to: Deal tactfully with members of the public, often under stressful conditions; Communicate effectively in providing information and assisting callers and visitors; Use a keyboard with moderate speed and a high level of accuracy;  Interpret and apply specific laws and ordinances, office policies, and procedures; Effectively organize activities and prioritize to meet deadlines; Operate standard office equipment.
