Job Description

Summary

This job is for a security guard at a secure treatment facility on McNeil Island, where you'll patrol the grounds, monitor residents, and ensure the safety of everyone on site, including responding to emergencies and escorting residents to medical appointments.

It's a hands-on role in a 24/7 environment that involves physical tasks like searches and interventions.

A good fit would be someone with prior experience in security or law enforcement who is reliable, observant, and comfortable working shifts in a high-security setting.

Key Requirements

  • One year of experience as a Security Guard 1, or High School Diploma/GED plus two years in security, corrections, law enforcement, or related fields
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to conduct foot patrols, security inspections, and unit checks
  • Experience or training in emergency response, including Quick Response Team or Crisis Negotiation Team
  • Skills in monitoring and controlling access to secure facilities, including vehicle gates and ingress/egress
  • Capability to physically escort residents, perform pat and strip searches, and intervene in unauthorized behaviors
  • Proficiency with radio communications and visual monitoring of residents

DSHS SCC Security Guard 2

Join our team at the Special Commitment Center (SCC) on McNeil Island in the picturesque Puget Sound.

We are a highly structured and secure treatment facility dedicated to assisting individuals who are detained and/or civilly committed in addressing their sexual offending histories.

We currently have multiple positions available for Security Guard 2 within SCC Total Confinement Facility.

As a Security Guard 2, you will play a crucial role in through the safety and security of all staff, residents, and visitors throughout the island.

You will participate in quick response or emergency response teams, hospital watches, and off-island escorts. This is a 24/7 facility.

A crucial aspect of your role will involve personally escorting residents to and from the community, attentively observing their interactions, and proactively intervening whenever necessary.

At SCC, we value our employees and offer additional benefits. In addition to the advertised salary, our employees receive a $10 per day premium pay and a free Orca card for transportation use.

Furthermore, ferry transportation is provided to McNeil Island employees from the Steilacoom dock. Evening and Night shifts include a shift differential in addition to the standard compensation rate.

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary.

Some of what you will do:

  • Routinely conduct facility foot patrols to ensure all areas are secure
  • Physically respond and or support as a member of one of the following teams: Quick Response Team, Emergency Response Team, or Crisis Negotiation Team
  • Control the main security systems throughout the total confinement facility to ensure appropriate ingress and egress of authorized personnel
  • Responsible for counts, security inspections, and unit checks
  • Monitor Vehicle Gate and all related traffic for resident transports, facility deliveries, as well as internal and external maintenance visitors
  • Responsible for conducting security inspections of all vehicles entering and exiting the facility
  • Utilize radio and other communication devices
  • Provide vehicle response and/or foot response
  • Intervene on and report any remarkable unauthorized behaviors of the residential population
  • Provide visual monitoring of residents
  • Physically transport secured residents to medical appointments in the community
  • Conduct pat and strip searches of residents as directed or needed

We encourage professionals who meet one of the following criteria to apply:

  • High School Graduation or GED AND two years of experience in areas of work such as security guard, correctional officer or store investigations, or, police officer, police reserve officer, military police, or other law enforcement work

And

  • A valid driver’s license is required

A certificate of completion in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; or, a certificate of completion in a police or reserve police academy or military training program will substitute for one of the two years of the required experience.


Preferred skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Lead by example
  • Possess knowledge of CPR and first responder level first aid
  • Demonstrate effective collaboration skills with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds
  • Display acute awareness of safety protocols and utilize strong judgment skills to assess environments and situations, making sound decisions within the scope of the job
  • Exhibit effective and flexible communication skills, including the ability to write comprehensive and concise documentation with attention to detail
