King County Road Services Division is seeking

King County Road Services Division is seeking two Drainage Design Engineers (Engineer II) to join our dynamic and supportive Drainage Design Unit. One position will focus on fish passage project design, and the other will focus on roadway drainage system design.

These positions provide an opportunity to contribute to projects that improve transportation infrastructure while protecting and restoring the natural environment in unincorporated King County.

The successful candidates will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, environmental scientists, geotechnical and structural staff, maintenance crews, and permitting agencies to develop construction-ready plans and reports.

  • The Fish Passage Engineer will primarily support the design of stream crossings and fish passage restoration projects that improve habitat connectivity for salmon and other aquatic species.

  • The Drainage Design Engineer will primarily support the design of roadway drainage systems and stormwater facilities to ensure safe and effective stormwater conveyance and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Requirements

Applying equity, racial, and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this position, you will:

  • Perform watershed analysis and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to support roadway drainage and fish passage projects.
  • Assist with the design of stream crossings, culverts, fish passage facilities, roadway drainage systems, and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Prepare hydrologic reports, geomorphic assessments, hydraulic analyses, and modeling reports.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Ensure designs comply with King County Road Standards, the King County Surface Water Design Manual, and applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Conduct field visits and site evaluations to support project development and design.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including environmental staff, geotechnical and structural engineers, maintenance crews, and project managers.
  • Utilize CADD and Civil 3D to develop engineering plans and design documentation.
  • Support project delivery from design through construction.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the job duties.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to hydrology, hydraulics, drainage systems, or fish passage design.
  • Experience with engineering software such as HEC-RAS, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
  • Ability to prepare or assist in preparing engineering reports, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documents.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment that values diversity and inclusion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with fish passage design, stream restoration, or geomorphic analysis (for the Fish Passage position).
  • Experience with roadway drainage system design or stormwater conveyance systems (for the Drainage Design position).
  • Experience conducting field evaluations and supporting construction projects.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Washington.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Ability to conduct field visits at project sites.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position has a Monday-Friday work week with 8 hour days and variable shifts. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act and is eligible for overtime pay, with prior supervisor approval.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS: This position has been designated as: Non-Mission Critical - Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed, suspended, or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical.

Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather.

TELEWORKING REQUIREMENT: We will work in the office at least three days a week to foster connection and responsiveness, arrive prepared and on time, and structure meetings with clear goals and next steps.

The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking, field work, onsite work and meetings as needed. The employee will report to work either at King Street Center (201 S.

Jackson, Seattle, WA 98104), and/or Renton Maintenance Facility (155 Monroe Ave NE, Renton, WA 98056).
