Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing legal documents by reviewing them for accuracy, handling mail and inquiries, entering data into systems, and keeping organized records in a U.S. Attorney's office.

It's an entry-level role supporting legal teams with administrative tasks in a government setting.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with office experience, basic computer skills, and the ability to handle routine tasks efficiently.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 (for GS-05) or GS-05 (for GS-06) in reviewing documents, data entry, and filing
  • Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors

GS-05: To be qualified at the GS-05 level, you must have: at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in Federal service; OR four (4) years of education above the high school level; OR a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.

Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in Federal service reviewing documents with basic legal implications for accuracy and completeness; receiving and routing incoming mail; responding to inquiries; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining filing systems; and performing data entry within an electronic automated database system.

Combination of education and specialized experience: Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one (1) year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-4 grade level.

Only education more than the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

GS-06: To be qualified at the GS-06 grade level, you must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in Federal service.

Specialized experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in Federal service utilizing a variety of electronic case management systems and office automation programs for the purpose of developing or maintaining docketing and record-keeping; determining appropriate legal action per incoming case (for example, receiving, distributing, and closing files); performing inputting, updating and extracting of legal data; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials reviewing.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

(A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy.

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for enforcing federal criminal and civil laws.

You will support Assistant United States Attorneys and legal support staff by performing docketing services using computerized case tracking and record-keeping systems, and by providing a variety of office support services.

Typical work assignments will include: Entering case-related information (such as information about litigation parties, court appearance dates, case deadlines, and case types) into computerized case tracking system.

Reviewing Electronic Case Filing notices from the courts and based on those notices, making necessary updates to case tracking system.

Using case tracking system to generate reports in response to inquiries. Gathering and reviewing information to correct and update case records.

Assisting with record retention for case files, including by updating computerized record-keeping system used to track file location and destruction dates.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
