Full Job Description

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to join the Lycoming County Maintenance Organization.

In this entry-level role, you will work under the guidance of experienced supervisors, managers, and technicians while participating in a structured, hands-on training program.

Throughout the program, you will learn and perform a full range of diagnostic, preventative maintenance, and repair duties on construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles powered by gasoline or diesel engines.

Requirements

In this role, you will take part in hands-on training that builds your skills in equipment repair, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and state inspection procedures.

Working alongside experienced staff, you will assist with repairs on a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment, learn to identify mechanical issues, and help maintain both fleet equipment and motorized hand tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with repairing and overhauling cars, trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment.
  • Learn to maintain and repair equipment such as sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders.
  • Support preventative maintenance, diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire services.
  • Help repair and adjust cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air-conditioning systems.
  • Participate in state safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation.
  • Use diagnostic tools to help identify equipment problems and determine repair needs.
  • Learn to maintain motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors, jackhammers, and mowers.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,844.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit; OR an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • All positions will require employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position is required to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the six-month probationary period.


Additional Requirement:

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission within the six-month probationary period.
  • You must possess a basic set of tools.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
