Full Job Description

This position will be conducting reviews, assessments, and analysis of the bureau’s new geographic information system (GIS)/ database to ensure overall efficiency.

Also, the position will conduct studies, analyses, of existing bureau systems to see how GIS can be implemented. They will identify future needs and enhancement.

The position will serve as the main contact with any Department of Technology, Management and Esri during the development, replacement, or enhancement of GIS system. Responsibilities will include implementation of new systems and monitoring system compliance.

Additionally, the position will be creating training materials and coordinating trainings with Special Personal Service Employees (SPS), fire departments, state agencies and businesses in the community.

This position provides the opportunity to work closely with statewide and national partners to improve fire and life safety outcomes and positively impact lives across the State of Michigan.

A significant part of this role involves analyzing fire data from across Michigan and identifying trends that support community risk reduction.

The analyst will work extensively with the National Emergency Response Information System and will serve as the State of Michigan’s subject matter expert for fire and emergency data.

This includes assisting local departments with data-related needs, preparing meaningful data-driven reports, and supporting statewide strategies aimed at reducing fire-related injuries, fatalities, and property loss.

The work performed in this position strengthens Michigan’s ability to understand fire risk, improve emergency response information, and ensure that accurate, high-quality data is available to guide public safety decisions.

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.



Experience

Departmental Analyst 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Departmental Analyst 10
One year of professional experience.

Departmental Analyst P11
Two years of professional experience, including one year of experience equivalent to the intermediate (10) level in state service.

Qualifications

Departmental Analyst 9 - 12 
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and the equivalent of at least two years of full-time active-duty experience at or above the E-6 level in the uniformed services may be substituted for the education requirement.

Preferred degrees: Bachelors in GIS, geography, data science, computer science, statistics, public administration, or a related field. A degree in a closely related discipline may also be considered if the applicant demonstrates relevant technical skills and experience.

  • Professional GIS certifications such as Esri Technical Certifications or Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP)
  • Data analytics or data visualization certifications such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau certifications)
  • Scripting or automation-related certifications such as Python or PowerShell certifications
