This job involves operating cranes to lift and move heavy materials at a naval shipyard, including on ships and in tight spaces where precision is essential to avoid obstacles.

You will serve as a CRANE OPERATOR in the RIGGING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT at the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Ability to understand standard safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, or damage to equipment and structures; Ability to perform loading and unloading operations on ships, where obstructions like masts and antennae complicate the process; Ability to operate cranes at all boom lengths, angles, and positions, adapting to the specific requirements of each task; Ability understanding of hand signals, verbal instructions, and other communication methods used by ground personnel to guide crane operations; Ability to understand how to compensate for variations in lifting capacity during position changes to ensure safe and accurate load placement.
