Job Description

Summary

This job involves working directly with families and children facing abuse or neglect, including investigating cases, managing support plans, placing kids in foster care, and providing counseling and referrals to help them improve their lives.

It's a hands-on role that often happens in homes or communities, with some travel and possible evening hours.

A good fit would be someone compassionate, organized, and committed to helping others, ideally with a background in social services or related studies.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social welfare or related field, or equivalent combination including 12 credits in sociology, psychology, social sciences, etc.
  • One year of professional social casework experience in a public or private agency (if degree lacks social welfare major).
  • Ability to conduct assessments, investigations, and case management for abuse/neglect cases.
  • Experience or willingness to provide supportive counseling, foster placements, and assistance in areas like home management, child rearing, and employment.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for home visits, community settings, and occasional work beyond regular hours.
  • Participation in county training programs leading to Caseworker certification.
  • No telework for first six months; full-time schedule Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Requirements

The primary responsibility of this position is the provision of direct service to a caseload where abuse and/or neglect has been identified.

Direct service includes but is not limited to the performance and provision of specific services such as, conducting assessments/investigations; case management; placement of children into foster homes; supportive counseling to children and their families; assistance in specialized areas such as home and money management, child rearing, employment, and living arrangements for children and adolescents; and case specific coordination and advocacy including making referrals to increase effectiveness of services.

The majority of the work is conducted during home visits or in community settings. This position requires travel, driving and transportation to and from visits, hospitals and other community settings. This position may require working beyond the regular workday to meet the needs of family members.

The employee in this position will participate in county training programs and formal trainings leading to a Caseworker certification for direct service.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30 minute lunch.
  • Telework: No telework for the first six (6) months of employment.

    After an employee has completed six (6) months of employment and has regular status, there may be opportunities for hybrid work, per the program offices' hybrid schedule.

    The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Six months of experience as a County Caseworker 1; or
  • Successful completion of the County Social Casework Intern program; or
  • A bachelor's degree with a social welfare major; or
  • A bachelor's degree which includes or is supplemented by 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences and one year of professional social casework experience in a public or private social service agency; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within two months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
