Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping people leaving prison reintegrate into society, with a special focus on supporting Alaskan Natives, Veterans, and Native Americans by connecting them to community resources like housing, health services, and treatment programs.

It requires working as part of a team in the Reentry Division, often collaborating with external partners such as jails, treatment facilities, and support organizations.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in reentry support who is passionate about cultural sensitivity and community collaboration, and who is already a permanent employee in the Washington State Department of Corrections represented by WFSE.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Three years of experience using participant-driven reentry strategies in adult or juvenile corrections (alternative to resource work experience)

Corrections Specialist 3 - Reentry Navigator - Position #NF61
Reentry Division
Spokane, Washington

The Department of Corrections (DOC) has a permanent, full time Corrections Specialist 3 (Cultural Specialist) opening available within the Reentry Navigator Unit. Position NF61 is located in Spokane, WA. Hours of work are 0800 - 1700, Monday - Friday. Upon hire, this position may have the ability to work at other DOC office locations within Eastern WA. Work hours are determined by unit needs and are at the discretion of the unit supervisor. If you are currently working an alternate work schedule, please be aware that this position may not be able to honor that schedule. For questions, please contact the Human Resource Office.

In accordance with Article 4.7 of the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) 2025-27 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), this job opening is available to internal transfer candidates ONLY. Employees who meet the following criteria may apply:

  • You are requesting a transfer under Article 4.7 of the WFSE CBA.
  • You are a permanent DOC employee.
  • You currently hold permanent status in the class being recruited for in this job posting.
  • You are currently in a position represented by WFSE.

This position is a member of the Reentry Division, Reentry Navigator Team.

The Reentry Division includes Education, Correctional Industries, Housing Voucher, and Strength in Families, just to name a few.

This position also serves as a member of reentry care teams that may include, but not be limited to, institution and community supervision staff, iCoach representatives, family, faith-based support, mentors, housing providers, Health and Human Service providers, and community support.

This specialist position has regional responsibilities with a focus on working with individuals that are Alaskan Native, Veteran, and Native American.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED and 5 years’ experience providing reentry/transition support to justice-involved population.

Five years of experience needs to include:

Three years of experience working with a range of system and community-based resources available to support the diverse spectrum of potential reentry needs such as collaborative relationships with entities external to the agency, such as county, city, and regional jails, residential/outpatient treatment facilities, housing organizations, health and human services providers, and/or work release facilities OR three years of experience using participant-driven reentry strategies in adult or juvenile corrections, social services, or closely related field.

OR

  • Associate's degree and 4 years’ experience providing reentry/transition support to justice-involved population.

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience providing reentry/transition support to justice-involved population.

OR

  • Master’s degree and 2 years’ experience providing reentry/transition support to justice-involved population.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with program participants, staff at all levels within the Agency and with a broad range of system- and community-based external stakeholder organizations.

  • Ability to build strong rapport with justice involved individuals and use effective engagement strategies to maintain open communication; gauge participant competencies; discuss needs, barriers, and goals; collaborate in problem- solving; and support each participant's capacity to prioritize action steps.

  • Ability to develop proficient skills in group facilitation.

  • Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with system- and community-based stakeholders. Demonstrate a willingness to receive, internalize, and learn from feedback to exhibit professional growth.

  • Knowledge of prison-, jail- and community corrections-based standards and rules with the ability to analyze information to identify problems and develop subsequent action and strategic plans.
    Possession of good interpersonal skills, ability to work without direct supervision, demonstration of high degree of motivation.
