Job Description

Summary

This job involves providing mental health treatment and support to prisoners in a state correctional facility, including assessments, interventions, and coordinating care for those with mental illnesses or disabilities.

Key Requirements

  • Master's degree in psychology, social work, or counseling

The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team providing a range of professional treatment services to mentally ill and/or mentally disabled prisoners within the Michigan Department of Corrections. This position is the lead worker level and provides oversight of the work of lower level clinicians, providing a distribution of work, review of work, guidance and assistance. The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional works with hospitalized, medically ill and other special populations. They are responsible for all aspects of the mental health evaluation, referral to the appropriate mental health level of care and treatment of the prisoners, monitoring their progress and ensuring continuity of care is not jeopardized. The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional provides a full range of psychosocial assessments and evaluations, interventions, consultations and referral services as assigned by the supervisor. They assist with placement and obtaining services when the prisoner discharges to the community.

Requirements

Education
Possession of a master's degree with a major in psychology, social work, or counseling.

Experience
Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional 12

Three years of professional experience providing QMHP services equivalent to a Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional, including one year equivalent to a Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional P11.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
