Full Job Description

St. Louis County Justice Services is looking for experienced corrections professionals interested in becoming Corrections Lieutenants.

The Corrections Lieutenants represent an opportunity to supervise the staff responsible for maintaining the safety, custody, security and control of inmates at all levels of security in an indirect or direct supervision, prisoner processing or work release environment on assigned shifts.

Corrections Lieutenants will be required to work any shift and may be required to work overtime.

The starting salary for this position may be within the first 20% of salary range and will be based on experience and qualifications. $25.00 per pay period in Justice Services for breathalyzer testing and/or weapon qualification certification and additional certification pay of $50 for breathalyzer testing and/or weapon qualification, CPR, Defensive Tactical Instructor, Taser, OC Spray for assigned positions 04/17/2022. 10% addition to base rate of pay in Justice Services applied to the hourly rate of employees for hours worked as a Field Training Instructor as assigned by the Appointing Authority 04/17/2022

Requirements

Essential Function Examples

Act as first-line response for assigned shift within Correctional facility.

Monitor shift operations to ensure proper shift coverage to ensure jail security.

Investigate disturbances, grievances and rule and regulation infractions by inmates and officers.

Inspect facility and equipment for contraband, cleanliness, and maintenance requirements.

Enforce rules and regulations to ensure adherence to policy and defined procedures.

Assist with employee development, retention evaluation and training of lower workers.

Maintains attendance records, performances logs and schedules.

Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Equivalent to thirty credit hours in the behavioral sciences, criminology or corrections and three years of work experience.

Required to work mandatory overtime and to work on any shift as needed.

Possession of a valid Driver's License.

Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid from the American Red Cross.

Some positions require possession of a Type III Alco? Analyzer and Breathalyzer operator's permit.

Some positions require certification as a service user by the Regional Justice Information Service (REJIS).

Some positions require qualification with the use of a weapon.

Physical Requirements: Extensive standing, walking, climbing stairs at least eight times daily per shift, using and lifting emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, AED, pepper spray, taser etc.), bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching overhead, continuously wearing an equipment belt, using a breathing apparatus, listening for possible disturbances, observation of required areas

Additional Information

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.

The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.

The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.

After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire.

Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
