This job is for a lead correctional officer who oversees shifts or teams at a jail, making sure inmates are safely managed, rules are followed, and the facility runs smoothly.
It involves directing other staff, handling investigations, and dealing with daily inmate activities under stressful conditions.
A good fit would be someone with several years of hands-on experience in corrections or law enforcement who can lead a team and stay calm in high-pressure situations.
Under general supervision, a Correctional Officer in this class functions as a shift or unit supervisor within a Correctional Facility and holds the rank of Lieutenant.
Correctional Officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates ensuring the care, custody, and control along with compliance with policy and procedure.
Correctional Officers in this class may serve as shift supervisors, or in some other mid-level supervisory capacity within a specific work unit or department.
Supervisors in this class enforce rules, regulations, and state law necessary for the control and management of residents and the maintenance of public safety.
The officer plans, reviews, and directs the work of subordinates and performs administrative duties related to the security and operation of the Correctional Facility.
The officer identifies posts and ensures adequate coverage. Conducts, assigns, supervises and/or evaluates inquiries or investigations and takes appropriate action.
Responsible for the overall efficient management of the correctional officer workforce.
Officers provide security over inmates at a facility or work unit; supervise the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement.
They interact with the visitors, staff, inmates and public to maintain orderly and secure operations. The work involves a high degree of mental stress from constant contact with inmates.
Performs related duties as assigned.
