Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a counselor in a women's prison, where you'll manage inmate records, create plans for their release back into society, and support their progress through meetings and assessments.

You'll collaborate with families, volunteers, and teams to help prepare inmates for life outside while following gender-sensitive approaches.

It's a good fit for someone with experience in counseling, social work, or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable with flexible hours.

Key Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in individual/group counseling, social/behavioral guidance, educational/vocational planning, or correctional/law enforcement duties involving reentry preparation and supervision
  • Equivalent of four years combining education and experience, with 30 semester hours of college coursework equaling one year of experience
  • Ability to maintain offender records, document progress, and handle computerized data entry in systems like ICON and I-SMART
  • Skills in completing custody classifications, assessments (including sexual violence propensity), and developing reentry case plans
  • Attendance at classification meetings, family interactions, volunteer coordination, and multi-disciplinary release processing
  • Completion of required training in reentry case management and gender-responsive practices
  • Obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and endorsements within a specified period after hire

Full Job Description

This position will have hours varied day and evening hours based on institutional needs.

Maintain offender records as outlined in ICIW/DOC policy.

This includes documenting offenders progress, strengths, and collateral contacts.
Completing custody classification, assessments/updated assessments, sexual violence propensity assessments, and conducting/maintaining reentry case plans. In addition, obtaining court reports, complete release process, and entering and retrieving computerized data (ICON) and (I-SMART).
Attend all classification meetings and prepare offenders for eventual release.

Responsibilities include: meeting with offender families, working with volunteers, tracking discharges dates, annuals and processing releases with a multi-disciplinary team.

All Counselors are required to receive reentry Case Management and Gender Responsive training.
Counselors shall perform all case management duties and offender interactions in a gender responsive manner.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Four years of full-time work experience in providing individual and group guidance and related counseling services in the areas of social, behavioral, educational, vocational and related program planning; or performing correctional, law enforcement, or jail administration duties involving community reentry preparation, pro-social behavior modeling, or supervision of individuals in work assignments.
  2. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

Additional Information
