This job involves working as a counselor in a minimum-security prison for men, where you'll provide guidance, counseling, and support to help incarcerated individuals prepare for release back into society through treatment, education, and work programs.

Key Requirements

  • Four years of full-time experience in individual and group counseling, guidance, or related services in social, behavioral, educational, or vocational areas
  • Four years of experience in correctional, law enforcement, or jail administration duties focused on community reentry, pro-social behavior, or supervision
  • Combination of four years of education and experience, where 30 semester hours of college coursework equals one year of experience
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with possible evening hours
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S., verified through E-Verify
  • Commitment to rehabilitation goals and working in a collaborative team environment

Full Job Description

The Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility is a minimum custody, male facility that houses approximately 1150 incarcerated individuals.
Our goal is to offer treatment, work, education and apprenticeship opportunities in order to prepare them for their entry back into the neighborhoods of Iowa.

Hours of Work:
Correctional Counselor schedules are flexible. Employees must balance 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, between the ours of 7:00 AM- 6:00 PM. Evening hours may be required as necessary.

Correctional Counselor:
This position gives employees an opportunity to have a positive affect not only the lives of our incarcerated population, but also the other employees of the Department of Corrections, as well as the incarcerated person’s families and communities.
Positive impacts are made through: Providing individual and group guidance and related counseling services to incarcerated individuals within a correctional facility, Participation in the development and implementation of specific plans and goals for rehabilitation, Development of plans and goals for reintegration into the community, as well as other related work as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Four years of full-time work experience in providing individual and group guidance and related counseling services in the areas of social, behavioral, educational, vocational and related program planning; or performing correctional, law enforcement, or jail administration duties involving community reentry preparation, pro-social behavior modeling, or supervision of individuals in work assignments.
  2. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

Additional Information
