Summary

This job involves handling sensitive administrative tasks in a military hospital, such as verifying family contacts for deceased patients, coordinating remains releases, and managing reports on seriously ill patients or birth certificates.

About the Position: This position is located in the Patient Administration Division at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes using automated systems, reviewing medical records, and preparing forms for review.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Business Management or Health Administration.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Major Duties:

  • Verifiy the identity of the legal next-of-kin of those patients who have expired in the medical center, when required.
  • Coordinate release of remains with the Department of Pathology, or the United States Institute of Surgical Research, as applicable, and the receiving mortuary or designated carrier.
  • Provide on-site administrative assistance to medical center wards, emergency room, clinics, and the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research, when requested.
  • Initiate, receive, and submit all completed Very Seriously Ill/Seriously Ill/Special Category Patient Report for the hospital.
  • Make personal contact with attending physician to obtain clarification of the recorded medical data, alcohol findings, and extent of disability and opinion of the line of duty status.
  • Review applicable medical documents of mothers and newborns in order to extract necessary data to be recorded on the State of Texas Certificate of Birth.
  • Ensure eligibility for medical care of those Reserve and National Guard personnel no longer on active duty who incurred an injury or disease while entitled to military pay, which are authorized follow-up medical care.
  • Attend state and/or local civilian sponsored seminars/courses relating to Vital Statistics (birth and death reporting).
