Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping military personnel, veterans, and their families understand and access health care benefits, such as TRICARE programs, by explaining options, interviewing patients, and resolving issues with claims.

It requires using computer systems to manage patient data and providing guidance to medical staff on regulations.

A good fit would be someone with customer service experience in healthcare or benefits, strong communication skills, and attention to detail, especially those eligible under military or veteran hiring preferences.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience providing assistance on health care benefits and using automated databases for patient data entry and retrieval
  • 52 weeks of federal service at GS-05 or equivalent within the last 52 weeks (time-in-grade requirement)

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to patients and beneficiaries regarding health care related benefits, and utilizing an automated healthcare database to enter and retrieve patient data.

This definition of nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Major Duties:

  • Explain the order of entitlement of health care benefits to beneficiaries provided from all sources.
  • Provide specific information about enrollment into the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) and/or the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP).
  • Explain the Continued Health Care Benefits Program (CHCBP) to former members and their eligible family members.
  • Receive and interview patients, sponsors or other person having knowledge of or accompanying the patient.
  • Contact beneficiaries to resolve inconsistencies with documents or incomplete data to support their medical/dental claims.
  • Interpret regulatory requirements and provide guidance and advice to civilian and military physicians, nurses, hospital staff and other health care professionals as needed in support of special treatment programs.
