Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping military personnel and their families with questions about health benefits, explaining TRICARE options, and fixing issues related to medical services and referrals.

It's based at a U.S. Air Base in Japan and is a temporary role that could become permanent after up to four years.

A good fit would be someone with customer service experience in healthcare or benefits, who is patient, detail-oriented, and comfortable working overseas in a military environment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience providing information on medical benefits, reviewing/submitting referrals, and resolving patient issues related to benefits or debts
  • 52 weeks of federal service at GS-05 or equivalent within the last 52 weeks (time-in-grade requirement)
  • No substitution of education for experience; must qualify based on experience alone
  • Eligibility under specific DoD categories, such as 30%+ disabled veterans, current DHA/DoD civilians, military spouses, or priority placement programs
  • Ability to handle inquiries via phone, in-person, or written about inpatient/outpatient care under USHBP and TRICARE
  • Experience troubleshooting problems for TRICARE beneficiaries and providers
  • Willingness to work in an overseas location (Misawa Air Base, Japan) as a term position not exceeding 4 years

About the Position: This position is located in the Tricare Operations division of the Directorate of Admin at the 35th Medical Group, located in Misawa Air Base, Japan.

THIS IS A TERM POSITION NOT TO EXCEED 4 YEARS. THIS POSITION MAY BE MADE PERMANENT.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing information about medical benefits authorized or availability of medical services; reviewing or submitting referrals for medical services; AND assisting in resolving patient issues related to medical benefits or debts.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Major Duties:

  • Serve as the point of contact on matters relating to health benefits programs available to eligible beneficiaries.
  • Provide information and assistance based upon personal, written, or telephone inquiries concerning both inpatient and outpatient medical care under the USHBP and medical care from civilian sources under the TRICARE program.
  • Provide advisory services on benefits offered through the TRICARE program.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems for TRICARE beneficiaries and providers.
  • Provide benefit briefings to eligible beneficiaries at various installation functions such as military retirement briefings, newcomer’s briefings, commander’s calls, and spouse orientations.
