The Position
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking dedicated, hands-on individuals to join the Region Four Price Construction Crew as a Transportation Technician II.
As a valued member of the Price Construction Crew, you will support the construction and maintenance of Utah’s state transportation system, helping UDOT fulfill its mission to Keep Utah Moving. This crew delivers essential construction projects throughout Carbon County, strengthening mobility, safety, and access for residents, businesses, and travelers.

Principle Duties
As a Transportation Technician in construction, you will perform inspection activities related to work performed by contractors, test roadway materials, and use various software to administer construction projects. To ensure operational readiness, you will also work in maintenance, operating heavy equipment from snowplows to backhoes to maintain the roads, inspecting and testing materials placed, and using software to manager the department's assets. After 18 months, each Transportation Technician is expected to cross-train in various construction areas. You will perform the following:


  • Assisting with the inspection and documentation of UDOT construction projects.

  • Conducting materials testing and documenting results to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.

  • Construction inspection and documentation on the work performed by contractors.

  • Collaborating with contractors on construction, maintenance, and permit projects.

  • When cross-training in a maintenance role, assist in snow removal operations as needed.

    • Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows/graders/blowers, etc.

    • Performing general maintenance on equipment.

  • Completing other duties as assigned and needed by department leadership.


Minimum Qualifications
The qualified candidate for this position must:
  • Hold a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with applicable endorsements, or be able to obtain one within eighteen (18) months of hire through Department-provided training and participate in the Region’s snow plan. ) See UDOT Policy 06A-15 Driver License Requirements.)
  • Be available for 24-hour on-call coverage.
  • Provide a smartphone with data at their own expense; eligible to receive a monthly taxable allowance to offset cell plan costs (See UDOT Policy 02-26 Cell Phones)t
  • Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Be reliable and able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Complete continued education in the UDOT Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).
  • Obtain and maintain any Region-required certifications within the first year of employment.
Underfill
This position may be filled at the Transportation Technician I level for applicants who do not meet the preferred qualifications listed below. To qualify at the TT I level, applicants must hold a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or be able to obtain one within eighteen (18) months of hire. After hire, the candidate will be required to complete all Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP), maintenance equipment, and construction certification requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to current UDOT employees and seasonal UDOT employees. Preference may also be given to applicants who have:
  • A Class "A" Commercial Driver's License.
  • Transportation Education Program (TEP) Transportation Technician II Training.
  • Construction experience on highway or local roadway projects.
  • UDOT maintenance/construction experience.
  • Professional work experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Professional work experience with and/or knowledge of roadway maintenance and snow removal.

Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all commercial driver license and learner permit holder’s.

Selected candidate will be required to register and authorize UDOT to conduct full pre-employment queries and limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be selected for this role.

  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
  • This position requires you to frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.
  • This position requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
