Full Job Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an experienced and self-directed Senior Construction and Maintenance Equipment Operator to be a part of the Drainage and Wastewater System Maintenance Division.

This position is an integral part of a team that operate and maintain the City’s Drainage and Wastewater system.

The Senior Construction and Maintenance Equipment Operator operate heavy equipment to support drainage and wastewater crews in the construction and maintenance of Seattle’s sewer and drainage system, safe operation of wastewater facilities and the overall maintenance of the wastewater system.

This position will report to the All-City District Manager.

Requirements

  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, track hoes, front end loader, hydraulic cranes, sweepers, graders, bulldozers, mowers and rollers.
  • Perform excavation of trenches and tunnels providing access to wastewater and drainage lines and related facilities.
  • Inspect existing facilities (decant facilities) and utilities and recommend improvements, maintenance and repair, or replacement.
  • Coordinate and lead the work activities of crews on the job site and decant facilities.
  • Perform operator level maintenance and inspection on equipment.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance or one (1) year of experience with completion of a recognized course in construction and maintenance equipment operation that includes practical operating experience.

Experience Equivalency:

  • Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.

License:

  • Commercial Driver's License – Class "A" with the airbrake restriction removed.
  • Valid Medical Certificate.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Required to be on call 24 hours/day to respond to emergencies.
  • Knowledgeable about Drainage and Wastewater system.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment in digging and rehabilitating wastewater and drainage lines and related facilities.
  • Exemplary safety record with strong commitment to DOT compliance, proper load securement, and safe work practices.
  • The ability to develop and maintain respectful and inclusive working relationships within a multicultural workforce and with the multicultural customers and communities we serve.

Working Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Required to work at any of the work locations operated by the Drainage and Wastewater.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, including weekends, evenings, nights and/or holidays as required.
  • Standing, bending, stooping, and lifting in excess of 50 pounds sometimes required.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Moderate physical exertion required to operate equipment.
  • Spend long periods of time operating heavy equipment, often in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Exposed to dust, dirt, high noise levels, diesel and gas fumes, and engine exhaust.
