We are looking for teammates who are:

  • Organized and detail-oriented professionals who can independently prioritize complex audit tasks
  • Skilled in applying accounting principles and audit methodologies to evaluate financial records and tax compliance
  • Comfortable using data analysis tools such as Excel, database systems, and data extraction or conversion software
  • Clear communicators who collaborate effectively with audit staff and explain technical findings to taxpayers or their representatives


What you will do:

As a Computer Audit Specialist, you will work with audit staff on technology assisted requests to file conversion activity, manage sampling and audit records, and conduct computer audits of financial records and tax returns of applicable taxes in South Carolina.


Primary job duties include:

  • Apply computer assisted audit techniques, statistical sampling methodology, SCDOR's standard operating procedures, and internal tax processing systems to assist field auditors on a statewide basis in conducting sales and use tax audits
  • Utilize database management software and other data analysis tools like Excel, QuickBooks, and PDF conversion software to assist staff on a statewide basis
  • Meet with taxpayers and/or representatives to discuss the audit and to present and explain the audit results
  • Conduct training of audit staff in the classroom and on the job
  • Research, draft documents, and make internal and/or external presentations on the use of computer assisted audit techniques
  • Facilitate computer assisted and/or statistical sampling audits involving a team audit approach
  • Assess CAS program and procedures to provide recommendations to managers and supervisors on improvements to programs and methodologies

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree and professional experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis


Additional requirements:

  • A valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation are required for field work. (Mileage reimbursement provided)
  • Field work may include overnight travel


Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Qualifications

  • 3 or more years of direct tax audit experience
  • 2 or more years of experience with Database Management software (QuickBooks, PDF conversion software, data analysis or data extraction software)
  • Knowledge of South Carolina and Federal tax law
  • Considerable knowledge of accounting principles methods and their application to the SC Tax Act and Regulations

  • Hours: Flexible hours may be available from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).
  • Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week after one year of employment with SCDOR.
  • Office location: Depending on space availability, you may have the option to choose which SCDOR office you work in (Columbia, Charleston, Florence, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Beaufort, or Rock Hill.).
