About The Division: The Recreation Division eliminates barriers through responsive, exceptional recreation services.

We operate over 50 recreation facilities (community centers, teen centers, pools, school-based learning centers, environmental learning centers, and boating and sailing centers) and provide opportunities for people to play, learn, and lead healthy, active lives.

Our programs and events include fitness and athletics, licensed childcare and preschool, swimming and boating, youth development and job preparation, academic enrichment, and more; including programs designed for older adults and people with disabilities, as well as grant and partnership programs designed and implemented with immigrant and refugee communities.

The Environmental Education Team of Seattle Parks and Recreation provides urban environmental education opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

The department is dedicated to expanding environmental equity and increasing urban environmental education and community engagement efforts.

About The Position: As a Seattle Parks and Recreation Naturalist you will develop, coordinate, and implement engaging, culturally relevant natural science and urban environmental education programs, classes, and activities for diverse populations throughout Seattle.

Our programs emphasize the interpretation of our urban and natural environments and will include public nature walks, booths and information stations at events or parks and working with communities on partnership programs.

Seattle Parks and Recreation bring community programs that promote Healthy People, Heathy Environment and Strong Communities.

This position will report to the Environmental Education Program Supervisor and will be one of three community liaisons bringing urban environmental education to City-wide equity identified neighborhoods.

The position will work closely with communities in North and Central Seattle and will be the Citywide Environment Educations team liaison with Seattle’s Indigenousness community groups.

Requirements

  • Build and maintain partnerships with other Seattle Parks and Recreation program providers, community organizations and schools in Citywide Equity Zones Agenda https://www.seattle.gov/Documents/Departments/OSE/SeattleEquityAgenda.pdf
  • Provide environmental education programming, experiences, and stewardship opportunities to the communities in Citywide Equity Zones.
  • Develop culturally inclusive environmental education materials and publications, including curriculum, booklets, guides, and multimedia visual programs.
  • Develop and lead training for staff, volunteers, and interns involved in program implementation and delivery.
  • Help coordinate volunteers, program support staff, and interns including recruiting, training, and evaluating.
  • Write, edit, coordinate, and distribute program promotional materials including brochures, fliers, and posters.
  • Maintain program records and prepare reports as requested including program budgets and evaluations.
  • Help manage educational equipment and supplies including maintaining and procure new equipment, coordinating repairs and training volunteers or new staff about equipment.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of special events and custom programs as needed.
  • Employ established principles, practices and techniques used in developing and evaluating public education programs.
  • Take on special job duties and small projects assigned.

Qualifications

Requires a minimum of two years of experience in a zoo, aquarium, museum, park, or a similar facility performing, preparing and/or coordinating interpretive educational programs, and a baccalaureate degree in natural sciences, natural resource management, education, or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
  • 6 months experience developing community-based curriculum for urban environmental programs
  • Relevant experience working with diverse age groups, from youth to adult
  • Knowledge of Pacific NW Forest ecology and local flora/ fauna and their interrelationships and the impacts from humans on the natural environment
  • Ability to make connections between the urban and natural environment and make current critical environmental issues relevant to diverse audiences
  • Experience teaching environmental justice
  • Ability to work cohesively in a team or partnership setting, as well as independently.
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, flexibility, and initiative.
  • Cultural competency and strong commitment to working with BIPOC communities
  • Certification from the National Association of Interpretation or a WA Teaching Certificate
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and maintain safety among program participants
  • Ability to take direction and feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, East African languages, Chinese or Vietnamese
  • Fluent in the use of PowerPoint, Excel, Class Program Registration, Point of Sale, Facility Booking, Volgistics and ARC budgeting tools.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current valid State of Washington driver's license
  • First aid and CPR certificate within six months of hire. (We pay for your certificate)

Additional Information

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • During nature walks and park activities, naturalists spend long periods of time standing or walking in all types of weather conditions.
  • Driving a twelve-passenger van is required as an essential function of this position – we can train you.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
