Full Job Description

This vacancy is for a GS-1801-12, Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Examiner located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S.

Coast Guard, SECTOR PUGET SOUND INSPECTIONS DIVISION in SEATTLE, Washington.

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis: Ensuring commercial fishing vessels comply with safety standards and regulations for various vessel types and sizes; performing technical reviews of commercial fishing vessels to determine compliance with federal and international standards vessel registration, licensing and crew certifications.

Ensuring hull, machinery, and dry dock inspection items are operating properly and in full compliance with applicable standards; conducting virtual inspections by utilizing technology for remote checks.

Maintaining relationships with stakeholders to promote acceptance and understanding of fishing vessel safety laws, regulations, and standards; advising on and ensuring life-saving equipment, fire safety and emergency systems are functional.

Conducting dock-side safety exams; evaluating crew competency during onboard emergency drills; providing required safety equipment training, explaining how to maintain items such as fire extinguishers, flares, personal flotation devices, emergency position-indicating radio beacons.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

You will serve as a Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Examiner and be responsible for examining commercial fishing industry vessels for compliance with applicable federal and international regulations.

You will also conduct inspections of other commercial vessels in order to maintain the recency of qualifications required for examining commercial fishing vessels.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: Planning, scheduling and conducting on-site examinations of commercial fishing vessels that carry and transfer fuel, for compliance with federal and international regulations..

Planning, scheduling and conducting on-site inspections of commercial vessels, including vessels in the Alternative Compliance and Safety Agreement (ACSA) fleet of vessels, for compliance with federal and international regulations...

Assisting in providing technical assistance, advice and program consultation to others in the interpretation and application of fishing industry vessel safety standards and regulations, compliance and inspection standards, and proper classification of violations and citations.

Training commercial fishermen in vessel stability, damage control, and operation of all equipment required aboard vessels as well as crew competency during onboard emergency drills.
