Job Description

Summary

This job involves providing psychological assessments, therapy, and treatment to individuals civilly committed as sexually dangerous in a federal prison setting, helping them prepare for safe community reentry.

A good fit would be a licensed clinical psychologist with experience in offender rehabilitation, particularly with sex offenders, who is comfortable working in a secure correctional environment.

The role requires strong skills in testing, diagnosis, and various therapy techniques to support humane care and public safety.

Key Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in clinical or counseling psychology
  • Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • At least one year of specialized experience in psychological assessments, diagnosis, and treatment in a clinical setting
  • Experience administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological tests including personality, risk, intelligence, and neuropsychological instruments
  • Proficiency in individual and group psychotherapy, using modalities like cognitive behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, and crisis intervention
  • For GS-13: Specific experience in assessing and treating sex offenders in correctional environments, including relapse prevention and social skills training

Full Job Description

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following: Basic Requirements: Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D.

or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required. NOTE: Applicants may have received this degree in either clinical or counseling psychology.

AND In addition to the basic requirements, you must have: Education: GS-12 and GS-13: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience: GS-12 and GS-13: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.

To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular assessments to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of the qualifying experience are: GS-12: Experience in administering and interpreting psychological assessment instruments, generating psychological reports and developing corresponding treatment recommendations with audits.

Experience in assigning a clinical diagnosis based upon an individual's reported symptoms, observed signs of psychopathology, psychological history and current functioning.

Experience in organizing and facilitating both individual and group psychotherapy on a regular basis.

Experience with several empirically based treatment modalities and techniques including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavior therapy and crisis intervention.

GS-13: Experience in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders in a correctional setting. Experience performing individual and group psychotherapy with sex offenders.

Experience with a wide variety of empirically based treatment modalities and techniques including behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, crisis intervention, social skills training, motivational interviewing and relapse prevention.

Experience with a wide variety of objective assessment instruments including intellectual, personality, sexual deviancy and risk assessment AND Selective Placement Factor: GS-12 and GS-13: ALL applicants applying for this position MUST also possess the following Selective Factor.

In the event that you do not possess the Selective Factor, you will be found ineligible for the position.

Applicant must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia.

**Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.** Major Duties:

Commitment and Treatment Program (CTP) provides a full spectrum of psychological services and comprehensive therapeutic treatment for individuals who have been certified and/or civilly committed as sexually dangerous persons.

Responsible for the administration, scoring and interpretation of a wide variety of psychological testing instruments and procedures, including objective instruments of personality assessment, risk assessment instruments and procedures, intelligence and cognitive tests, neuropsychological assessment instruments, and inventories of interest, aptitude, criminality and achievement.

Responsible for preparation of psychological reports for various uses.

Performs both individual and group psychotherapy; and conducts a wide variety of interviews and crisis intervention sessions on an as-needed, unscheduled basis.

Serves as a source of expert advice and opinion, and demonstrates knowledge of research techniques and findings as relevant to the area of evaluation and treatment of sex offenders.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
