Summary

This job involves conducting a range of lab tests on blood and other samples to help diagnose and treat patients in a county health setting, while also managing equipment, quality checks, and training newer staff.

It's a mid-level role at a medical center or health clinic in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on lab experience who enjoys detailed scientific work and working as part of a healthcare team.

Key Requirements

  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the Department of Health Services (must be attached to application)
  • One year of full-time experience as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist performing varied clinical tests
  • Proficiency in clinical lab procedures including chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunohematology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot manual and automated lab equipment
  • Skills in quality control, data evaluation, specimen processing, and reporting test results to medical staff
  • Experience with blood typing, crossmatching, reagent preparation, and inventory management
  • Successful background investigation, fingerprinting, and possible physical exam

The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is accepting applications on an ongoing basis to fill experienced level Clinical Laboratory Scientist positions which may be assigned to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez or health centers located in Richmond or Pittsburg.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist II is a journey level classification. Employees perform a variety of professional clinical laboratory procedures and are responsible for the technical accuracy of bacteriological, hematological, biochemical, serological, coagulation and transfusion tests. They also evaluate the validity of test data, maintain quality controls, and assist in the training and development of less experienced scientists and technicians.

Performs clinical laboratory procedures in clinical chemistry, micro-biology, hematology, immunohematology, urinalysis and phlebotomyOperates and maintains manual equipment and automated, computer controlled equipmentMaintains quality control statistical dataDraws blood for laboratory testing and processes specimensPerforms laboratory tests in each area of the laboratory on a rotation basisReports patients test results verbally and in writing to members of the medical and nursing staffsStains and interprets blood smears of other biological specimensTypes and crossmatches blood for transfusionPrepares laboratory reagentsMonitors supply inventoriesMaintains laboratory logs and records Qualifications License Required: Possession of a valid license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist issued by the California State Department of Health Services is required.
