Job Description

Summary

This job involves assessing new inmates at a correctional facility by conducting interviews, administering tests for intelligence, academics, and substance abuse, and making referrals for further help.

It also includes orienting inmates to the prison system and handling their paperwork for assignments or transfers.

A good fit would be someone with experience in counseling, administration, or corrections who is comfortable working in a prison environment and has strong organizational skills.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or
  • Associate’s degree plus one year of administrative or correctional experience, or
  • High school diploma plus two years of administrative or correctional experience
  • Ability to administer and evaluate group tests for intelligence, academic achievement, and substance abuse
  • Skills in conducting intake interviews and generating referrals based on assessments
  • Proficiency in reviewing records, documenting information, and completing institutional assignments
  • Successful completion of four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire

Full Job Description

  • Under general supervision, administers group/selected individual tests, conducts interviews to determine vocational and treatment information.

  • Refers inmates for additional assessment.

  • Provides orientation from each inmate through video and verbal communication.

  • Explains the intake process and provides an overview of the SCDC.

  • Administers and evaluate group tests of intelligence, academic achievement and substance abuse.

  • Individually conducts the intake assessment interview on each inmate and makes appropriate CRT entries as required on assessment screens.

  • Generates appropriate referrals based on assessment data.

  • Reviews all inmate records for appropriate documentation and contact proper individuals/agencies to obtain additional information when needed.

  • Completes institutional assignment and add transfer requests to assigned institutions.

Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.


SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree.

OR

  • An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
