Job Description
Summary
This job involves reviewing inmate records, conducting interviews, and making decisions about their housing, work, and programs in a prison setting to ensure fair treatment.
It also includes counseling inmates on their adjustment and responding to questions from officials.
A good fit would be someone with experience in administration or corrections who is organized, empathetic, and comfortable working with people in challenging situations.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
- Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody, employment, and programs
- Skills in interviewing inmates and conducting periodic progress reviews
- Experience counseling inmates on institutional adjustment and related issues
- Proficiency in operating computers to access inmate histories (social, criminal, educational, family)
- Ability to coordinate and implement a classification system for a caseload of about 250 inmates
- Successful completion of four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
Full Job Description
- Evaluates inmate records to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, employment and treatment program.
- Coordinates and implements an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
- Conducts periodic reviews and evaluates inmate's progress.
- Interviews inmates, discusses and records progress made on a periodic basis.
- Counsels with inmates regarding their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
- Responds orally and/or through written correspondence to inquiries for information on inmates by departmental officials and other agencies.
- Operates the computer to ascertain information pertaining to inmates social, criminal, educational and family histories.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree.
OR
An associate's degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
OR
A High School Diploma and any two (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
