Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing inmate records, interviewing prisoners, and leading a committee to decide on their housing, security levels, work assignments, and rehabilitation programs in a correctional facility.

It requires managing a group of about 250 inmates and using computer systems to track their progress and history.

A good fit would be someone with experience in administration or corrections who is organized, fair-minded, and comfortable working in a prison environment.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or associate's degree plus one year of administrative/correctional experience, or high school diploma plus two years of administrative/correctional experience
  • Ability to evaluate inmate records for eligibility in assignments, custody changes, jobs, and programs
  • Experience chairing classification committees and coordinating equitable systems for inmate caseloads
  • Skills in conducting inmate interviews and periodic progress reviews
  • Proficiency in operating SCDC computer systems for entering and retrieving inmate data
  • Must successfully complete four weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from officials and agencies

Full Job Description

  • Under the general supervision of the Classification Case Manager, evaluates inmates automated and manual record to determine eligibility for institutional assignment, custody changes, jobs and treatment program.
  • Serves as chairperson of the institutional classification committee.
  • Coordinates an equitable classification system for a caseload of approximately 250 inmates.
  • Conducts periodic reviews of inmate's progress.
  • Interviews inmates relating to their general institutional adjustment or related problems.
  • Responds to inquiries of information from departmental officials and other agencies.
  • Operates the SCDC computer system to enter/retrieve information pertaining to inmate's social, criminal, educational and family history.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Must successfully complete four (4) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required related experience.



SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree.

OR

  • An associate’s degree and any one (1) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.

OR

  • A high school diploma and any (2) year combination of administrative and/or correctional experience.
