Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an Associate Civil Engineering Specialist (Field Work) to join SPU’s Construction Management Division.

CMD provides contract administration and quality assurance inspection services for Capital Improvement Projects, as well as inspection management of SPU’s assets.

This position will work closely with a diverse work group on municipal, commercial and residential projects.

Requirements

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the plans, specifications, special provisions, and permits related to project(s) that are assigned to this position.
  • Provide quality control and assurance for the contractor’s work.
  • Document contractor’s work with a Daily Inspection Report (DIR) and appropriate supporting documentation/photographs.
  • Verify that permitted equipment and supplies have been installed and tested, and that all contract documents and permits have been met.
  • Coordinate efforts with the supervisor, resident engineer, permit-related inspectors, technical testing services and specialty consultants, assist REs to ensure contractor compliance with project plans, specifications and all permit conditions.
  • Assist REs in providing necessary documentation for contractor payments.

Qualifications

Experience: Two years of Civil Engineering or Construction Management office/field experience

Education: An Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology.

Experience/Education Equivalency: A combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

License, Certification and Other Requirements: Current Washington State driver's license

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Must be willing to undertake field assignments that may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Must be able to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able and willing to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

The ideal candidate may possess:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in construction contract administration.
  • Apprenticeship or building trade experience is preferred.
  • Minimum 2-year degree related to construction management or civil engineering.
  • Field experience in construction management is preferred.
  • Experience interpreting construction drawings, as-built sketches and other source document materials related to utility infrastructure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team, using good judgment and attention to details.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Exemplary organizational, planning and coordination skills.
  • Multi-tasking and time management skills.

Pre-Employment/Pre-Placement Requirements:

  • If you are selected to advance in this hiring process, you may be asked to acquire a Full Washington Drivers Abstract from the Department of Licensing. Please do not provide until requested.
  • SPU’s safety program requires a pre-employment medical assessment as a condition of employment in this position.

Workplace Environment/Telework Expectations: This position requires 5 days of office/field work. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor. Please note that part of each workday will be performed out in the field.

The full salary range for this position is $53.60 - $62.40 per hour.
