This job is for a nurse who helps manage the operating room during surgeries, making sure everything runs smoothly and patients stay safe from start to finish.
They work with doctors, anesthesiologists, and other staff in a busy hospital setting, handling tasks like preparing equipment and following strict cleanliness rules.
A good fit would be someone detail-oriented, quick-thinking, and calm under pressure, with experience in surgical nursing and strong teamwork skills.

The system provides access to health care to all residents of our county, with special emphasis on providing access to care for the underserved and those facing barriers. Santa Paula Hospital offers a comprehensive list of inpatient and outpatient services and full-service departments for diagnostic procedure, treatment, aftercare and ongoing care. Ensures that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient and ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure (including surgical counts, time outs, positioning, and traffic control, and keeping a clutter free environment);Leads and coordinates all communications and activities among team members, including using the white board, coordinating the use of equipment, and contacting other providers when services are required, etc.;Prepares the patient for the procedure, which includes reviewing medical records & history, patient assessment, review of consent and test results, verification of surgical site; handles the preparation for the operating room, before the surgery takes place, ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, supplies, medications, and imaging are available; and communicates with physician on any concerns raised by these activities;Assists anesthesia caring for the patient during induction, extubating, and emergence to ensure the safety of the patient;Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, surgical assistants, anesthesiologists, and surgical technicians during the surgical procedure;Documents events, implants, specimen handling, medication administration, and patient status;Provides direction to other health care professionals and ancillary staff who are participating in the care of the patient;Provides oversight to other operating room personnel; Monitors the overall well-being of the patient during the surgical procedure;May transport specimens that require diagnostic testing to the laboratory, handles and cares for specimens and appropriately documents the disposition of the specimen;Orients qualified candidates and new personnel on hospital policies and procedures;Provides emotional support for the patient and family members before, during, and after the surgical procedure; andPerforms other related duties as required.
Qualifications These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCEGraduation from an accredited school of nursing; AND, one (1) year of recent full-time experience in a perioperative setting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMust possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of CaliforniaMust have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.Must be willing and able to take after-hour calls and weekend calls.DESIREDA Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN)Possession of a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificationPossession of an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificationPossession of a Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certificationPossession of a Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certificationPrior Tier 2 trauma center experienceKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:Thorough knowledge of:The theories, techniques, and practices used in advanced nursing care of specialized units, including an acute care operating room; Surgical procedures, anatomy, and instrumentation;Medical terminology; Hospital routine and equipment; and Medicines and narcotics.Working knowledge and proficiency with:Electronic medical records ("EMR") systems.Skill in: Effective leadership, problem solving, collaboration, and communication; Ability to:Plan and organize nursing care with a high level of attention to detail, work in a high-pressure environment, remain calm in a crisis, and handle long, arduous work hours; Orient new staff;Be a self-starter;Make critical decisions based on available information about the patient;Coordinate the patient's health care;Collaborate with physician and other health care professionals;Direct the activities of other operating room personnel;Maintain the confidentiality of patient/client information;Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with other staff members, patients, and their families in difficult situations; andCommunicate effectively both orally and in writing.
