The Chief of Campus Police & Safety leads the law enforcement and safety team at York Technical College, overseeing police operations, emergency responses, and safety training to keep the campus secure.

Key Requirements

  • Certification by the SC Law Enforcement Training Council (Class I within one year of hire)
  • SLED Group I Constable certification
  • Knowledge of state and local laws, including civil rights
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures
  • Working knowledge of fire prevention, OSHA, Hazmat, emergency operations, and public safety
  • Ability to supervise personnel, develop training programs, and manage reporting procedures

York Technical College, a member of the South Carolina Technical and Comprehensive Education System, is a public, two-year institution of higher education that offers a variety of associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Through maximizing student success, the College seeks to contribute to the economic growth and development of York, Lancaster, and Chester counties and of the State.

The Chief of Campus Police & Safety performs the following functions:


  • Serves as the lead supervisor for the College Department of Law Enforcement & Safety. Participates in interview, hiring and retention process. Completes evaluations for all full-time employees annually. Prepares budget, purchase requisitions and maintains department records.
  • Serves as the Safety Advisor, chair of Safety Committee and member of the Crisis Management Team. Participates in other related committees.

    Coordinates, develops and disseminates safety program information to college employees. Conducts or coordinates safety related training.

    Assists Facilities Management in the analysis/evaluation of hazardous materials and environmental controls. Participates in site inspections and program operations to identify potential hazards.

    Coordinates emergency procedures and response to maintain employee safety.

    Serves as the Chief of the College Police Department. Oversees and is responsible for the record management system (RMS) and reporting criminal data.

    Stays abreast of new laws and police training tactics. Provides state required training to law enforcement officers to assist in their duties.

    Maintains and updates College armory of weapons, equipment, and police vehicles as required for law enforcement. Attends training/seminars provided by state law enforcement division and agencies.

  • Monitors campus activity and incident reports in order to provide proper safety coverage for the campus. Adjust schedules and patrols to increase effectiveness of the department. Maintains order during emergencies, conduct surveillance and exercises arrest powers as required.
  • Manages the Public Safety communication and video surveillance system. Acts as a liaison and maintains periodic contact with local law enforcement agencies. Assist in fire prevention. Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field and at least ten years’ work experience in law enforcement, to include at least three years in a supervisory capacity; or
  • An Associates Degree in Criminal Justice Technology and at least fifteen years’ work experience in law enforcement to include at least five years' in a supervisory capacity.
  • Certification by the SC Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with state law (23-23-40) is required or the ability to be certified as Class I within one year of date of hire.
  • SLED Group I Constable certification.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of State & Local laws (including civil rights).
  • Considerable knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of fire prevention, fire protection systems, OSHA and Hazmat safety programs, emergency operations, disaster planning and all aspects of public safety.
  • Ability to coordinate, supervise programs and personnel, develop and deliver training programs to subordinated, faulty, and staff.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate reporting procedures.
  • Ability to deal professionally with the general public.
  • Ability to use good judgement.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Required to work in all types of weather conditions and be on call for all hours as needed.
  • Subject to overnight travel as required.
  • Must be physically fit to respond to emergency situations and take appropriate actions to enforce state law.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to patrol campus on foot for extended periods of time and lift minimum of 25 lbs law enforcement equipment.
