Job Description

Summary

The Chief Forensic Pathologist leads a team in investigating suspicious or unexplained deaths by performing autopsies and analyzing evidence to determine causes of death in Sacramento County.

This role involves overseeing the coroner's office operations, ensuring accurate reports for legal proceedings, and managing staff in a high-stakes environment.

Ideal candidates are experienced medical doctors with specialized training in forensic pathology who thrive in leadership positions and have a commitment to public service.

Key Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD or DO) degree from an accredited institution
  • Board certification or eligibility in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology
  • Valid California medical license
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in forensic pathology practice
  • Leadership and management experience in a medical or coroner's office setting
  • Completion of accredited training in specialized areas like Neuropathology or Forensic Toxicology for 10% salary differential
  • Strong skills in autopsy performance, evidence analysis, and court testimony

There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential which is added to the posted salary for this class.

The salary range for this position is $346,858.56 - $382,417.20 annually plus an additional 3.35% management incentive for a combined total of $358,478.32 - $395,228.18 annually.

The salary range with both the 3.35% management incentive and the 10% differential* is a combined total of $393,164.18 - $433,469.90* annually.

*The Chief Forensic Pathologist is eligible for a ten percent (10%) differential upon completion of an accredited training program, with or without Board certification, in one or more of the following areas: Neuropathology, Forensic Odontology, Radiology, Forensic Anthropology, Cardiac Pathology, Pediatric Pathology, and Forensic Toxicology.
