Requirements

About the Work Unit
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services maintains four operational forensic science laboratories throughout the state: Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction, and The Northern Region. Forensic Services is responsible for the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes. All work is completed under the CBIFS Quality and Management system in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Work Environment
  • Typical work hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Primary work will be out of an office. Majority in-person position.
  • 50%-active work moving, lifting, organizing objects
  • 50% -office work including data entry

Key Responsibilities
This position enters information into various information/database systems in support of the Firearms section and the forensic laboratory system. Utilizes various databases/information systems within CBI such as the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position may be called upon to provide courtroom testimony. Enters case information into LIMS and receives evidence from submitting agencies. Provides additional evidence support as needed.

Screens fired cartridge cases for suitability for entry into the NIBIN. Microscopically screens the cartridge cases for the number of sources (firearms).

Makes entries into the NIBIN Brasstrax system, reviews correlations in the NIBIN Matchpoint system, test fires submitted firearms, documents all steps of the process in LIMS, writes search notification reports on results, completes correlation and technical reviews.

Responsible for case submission in LIMS, receiving evidence from law enforcement agencies, and following approved and legal guidelines for evidence.

Ensures the integrity of the chain of custody and proper packaging of the evidence.

Transporting evidence between CBIFS Laboratories, transferring evidence from the evidence vault to CBIFS employees for analysis, and releasing evidence back to the submitting agency after testing is complete.

This position is responsible for creating accurate laboratory records, and all information entered into the LIMS.

Qualifications

NOTE: To be considered for this position, you must meet one of the following options for consideration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)
Three years experience researching confidential database, cataloging information and clerical responsibilities

OR

A combination of related education and/or experience researching confidential database, cataloging information and clerical responsibilities equal to three (3) years. If education is substituted for work experience, an unofficial transcript of the relevant education must be provided with your application.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current CDPS employee.
  • Laboratory experience or familiarity with laboratory processes.
  • Knowledge and experience handling firearms.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be Colorado resident at the time of application
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, driving history, Personnel Evaluation (PEP) assessment, fingerprint based criminal history search and a drug test.
  • This position may be required to handle, package and store evidence items that could be considered hazardous.

    Drug testing equipment contains caustic materials or acids as do the dangerous drugs themselves. Although infrequent, it is possible for this position to have direct exposure to hazardous materials.

  • Current valid driver's license at time of hire, and must obtain a Colorado-issued driver's license within 6 months of hire. This position may be required to assist in another laboratory throughout the state and may be required to provide courtroom testimony statewide.
  • This position is requires to move up to 40-50 pounds from one location to the next occasionally.
  • This position frequently lifts and carries items or containers that may be heavy or require lifting above the shoulders. This position also requires frequent walking, pulling and pushing.
  • This position is required to be available to respond to the central evidence facility to assist troopers in booking large quantities of evidence.
