This job involves working as a carpenter on a construction crew at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where you'll build, repair, and modify wooden structures and components like walls, stairs, furniture, and scaffolding across the campus.
It's a hands-on role focused on completing various construction projects to maintain and improve the facility.
A good fit would be someone with practical carpentry experience who is physically fit, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently or in a team without much oversight.
The incumbent will be assigned to the Facility Management Service's Maintenance and Operations Construction Crew.
The Construction Crew's primary purpose will be to complete construction projects located throughout the hospital campus.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.
Knowledge of Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires considerable bending, kneeling and stopping.
If the assignment is located at a job site, streneous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as sheets of plywood and other building or construction materials.
Use manual or portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Construction work typically requires bending, stooping, climbing on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops.
Lifts and moves materials weighing up to 40 pounds. With assistance may lift/move heavier items. Major Duties:
Duties include but are not limited to: Measures, cuts, constructs or repairs wood or wood substitute items such as scaffolding, staging, parts, panels, bin pallets, concrete forms, dry wall and roof decking.
Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies wood, composite and wood substitute materials by performing work to close tolerances, exact fit and structural soundness, Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies building components such as rafters, walls, staircases, windows and frames, trim work and furniture/cabinets.
Plans and completes projects to involve constructing, altering, repairing and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.
Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc.
Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit and structural soundness. Operates and uses a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools.
Operates and uses carpentry tools by setting-up, adjusting and maintaining tools to meet required specifications.
Operates and uses a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting and maintaining tools to meet required specifications.
Plans, measures and lays out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques.
Projects involving constructing, altering, repairing and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.
Plans, measures and lays out carpentry materials using advanced shop mathematics for complex and exact projects.
Plans, measures and lays out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints and building codes.
Shall assemble or disassemble the various modular furniture systems the PVAHCS has.
Shall operate a forklift and other rolling stock, after receiving training, as required to execute construction projects.
