Full Job Description

Erects, maintains, repairs and/or remodels all types of wood and/or metal structures within or upon City property.

Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Qualifying Requirements:

    Your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will receive notice of your eligibility status via email.

    • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show four (4) years of full-time, paid professional experience as a carpenter. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

    • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a high school diploma or equivalency.

    • EQUIVALENCY: Education may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above).

      The total qualifying requirement is four (4) years. Eligible applicants must possess one of the following combinations of education and work experience:

      • High School diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of full-time paid professional experience as a carpenter.

      -OR-

      • Journeyman Carpenter Certificate.

      -OR-

      • Two (2) years of related education (apprentice program) and two (2) years of full-time paid professional experience as a carpenter.

      Qualifications

      If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will receive a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates receiving job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) before the date of hire.

      • Written: None required for this position.
      • Performance: None required for this position.
      • Medical: Required.

      NOTE: The Department may require a written/performance skills assessment at the time of interview. This is not a Civil Service Examination.

      Additional Information

      • Builds, constructs, installs metal studs, drywall and suspended ceilings, repairs and remodels structures and builds cabinets and other objects by cutting, shaping and joining wood, plastic, metal or other structural materials.
      • Repairs and replaces any object made from wood and/or metal such as floors, stairs, doors, furniture, window frames, etc.; builds wooden forms for concrete and/or cement.
      • Erects scaffolds, concession stands, cages, barricades and similar structures as requested or required.
      • Repairs and installs all types of door hardware.
      • Sands and restores wood floors.
      • May direct the work of assigned lower-level personnel on the same job as assigned.
      • May drive City a vehicle.
      • May use a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (i.e., email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
      • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
