Job Description
Summary
This job is for a Captain at a South Carolina prison, where you'll oversee daily operations, manage staff and inmates, and ensure everyone's safety in a secure environment.
It's ideal for someone with experience leading teams in corrections, law enforcement, or the military who wants to take on a supervisory role in a state facility.
You'll need to complete training and follow policies to coordinate security and support programs for inmates.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Six years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- Two years of supervisory experience in a relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience (year for year, associate degree = 2 years)
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of starting
Full Job Description
- Directs and supervises the day-to-day operations and activities of the uniformed staff and inmates.
- Ensures the security and safety of all staff, inmates, and visitors.
- Under minimum supervision and guided by written policies and procedures, allocates officers and other resources to various duty shifts and functional areas.
- Coordinates with institutional classification and treatment staff to ensure effective integration of all security/treatment operations and activities.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
