Job Description
Summary
This job is for a Captain at a medium-security prison in South Carolina, where you'll oversee a team of security officers, manage daily operations to keep the facility safe, and ensure everyone follows rules and policies.
It's ideal for someone with experience leading teams in corrections, law enforcement, or the military who wants to step into a supervisory role focused on inmate safety and institutional security.
You'll handle training, inspections, and quick decisions to maintain order without major incidents.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Six years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- Two years of supervisory experience in a relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience (year-for-year for associate or higher)
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of hire
Full Job Description
- Schedules, directs and manages the employment and duty activities of a security shift engaged in the security operations of a level three facility.
- Supervises, inspects, and ensures proper perimeter and internal security and control measures are in effect and enforced.
- Prepares, submits, and monitors reports required by the chain of command and policy.
- Directs and redirects security resources for optimum security and safety.
- Ensures that institutional buildings and state property are properly secured.
- Trains, develops, instructs, evaluates, and counsels subordinates to ensure duty performance is in accordance with state laws and agency policies.
- Ensures the proper control, issues, and use of weapons, keys, security devices and agency equipment.
- Inspects all posts where shift employees are deployed.
- Interviews and counsels inmates as necessary to ensure maximum safety and security.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
