Job Description
Summary
This job is for a Captain at a South Carolina prison, where you'll oversee daily operations, manage staff and inmates, and ensure everyone stays safe and secure.
It involves assigning officers to shifts, coordinating with other teams, and following prison rules with little direct oversight.
A good fit would be someone with experience leading teams in corrections, security, or similar high-stakes environments, who can handle responsibility and training.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Six years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- Two years of supervisory experience in a relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience (year for year)
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of hire
Full Job Description
- Directs and supervises the day-to-day operations and activities of the uniformed staff and inmates.
- Ensures the security and safety of all staff, inmates, and visitors.
- Under minimum supervision and guided by written policies and procedures, allocates officers and other resources to various duty shifts and functional areas.
- Coordinates with institutional classification and treatment staff to ensure effective integration of all security/treatment operations and activities.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
