St. Louis County Department of Transportation and Public Works is currently hiring to fill vacancies on their Building Maintenance team at their complex in Clayton, Missouri.

The role, Building Systems Mechanic, will perform mechanical and maintenance work on a journeyman level in an assigned area of specialization.

The hourly starting salary is between $21.49 - $25.79 and will be based on your experience and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Provide maintenance support and repair for County facilities
    • Perform electrical maintenance, repair and installation work associated with conduit and cable runs, switchgear and panels, electronic instruments and control equipment, motors, security and fire protection equipment, lighting, gas and electric heaters, refrigerators and laundry appliances, chillers and boilers, and generators and transformers
    • Perform plumbing/pipefitting maintenance, repair and installation associated with plumbing fixtures and assemblies; PVC, copper, cast iron, other metal and glass piping; boilers and chillers; hot water generators; and water treatment systems
  • Perform HVAC and mechanical maintenance, repair and installation associated with system controls; boilers and chillers; commercial and residential-type HVAC systems; food preparation and storage equipment; material handling equipment; confinement systems; power generation and filtering equipment; and water treatment equipment
  • Perform such additional duties, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment, as may properly be required of a position in this job class including asbestos material remediation/abatement and hazardous material/waste handling
    • Perform custodial tasks associated with the care and cleaning of County facilities
    • Remove snow and ice
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned


Qualifications

Building Systems Mechanic:

  • Graduation from Technical School or completion of a formal apprenticeship in a skilled building systems trade
  • At least three years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • A current, valid driver's license is required

EQUIPMENT USED: Automobile, van, dump truck outfitted with a snowplow and salt spreader; band saw; broom; come along; computer; drill press; drills; electric arc welder; grinder, HVAC tools (i.e. refrigeration gauges, vacuum pump, leak detector, temperature sensing monitor); manlift; pipe cutter and threading machine. Power equipment; propane and acetylene torches; soldering equipment; hand tools; measures and levels.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Balance, bend at waist; climb or work on or from manlifts, scaffolding, ladders, and stairs; exposure to dust/dirt, fumes and hazardous materials, crawl, kneel, lift, push/pull, reach above shoulder level, squat, stoop; stand or walk for long periods, stoop, walk for long periods; walk on uneven ground; work in extreme temperatures (heat/cold) and out of doors in inclement weather.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.

The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
