The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Building Services Electrician. This position performs skilled maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical systems including building, conduit systems for telecommunications, security, life safety, motors, and other electrical systems; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the full journey level class within the Building Services Electrician series. Employees within this class perform the full range of skilled electrician duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from a supervisor and higher level staff.

Examination Process
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years. You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.

Eligible List:
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.


Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.

Requirements


Essential Functions:

Constructs, installs, troubleshoots, inspects, repairs, replaces and maintains all wiring for city buildings, telecommunications conduit, and security and life safety systems.

Brings any regulatory, specification or procedural infractions into compliance. Participates in the design and fabrication of control circuits.

  • Operates a variety of circuit testing equipment, aerial lift equipment, pneumatic tools, trenchers, diggers, compressors, wire pulling devices, conduit bending equipment, small power tools, hand tools and related equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, schematic drawings and related symbols and markings.
  • Assists in planning new electrical systems; estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; researches and requisitions materials as required; maintains files and receipts; verifies manifests upon receipt and inspects materials delivered by vendors; moves materials into storage.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Adheres to all related codes, regulations, specifications and procedures for duties assigned including obtaining required permits. Adheres to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Responds to electrical emergencies during evenings and weekends.

  • Marginal Functions:

    1. Locates, marks and outlines underground conduits and services for utilities in an excavation area.
    2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


    Qualifications


    Experience:

    Two years of increasingly responsible journeyman electrical experience.

    Training:

    Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training in the electrical fields.

    License or Certificate:

    Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

    On the date of application, must possess or have completed any one of the following four:

    1. A journeyman or master electrician card recognized by a trade union, such as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), or by a local, state or national government agency.
    2. Successful completion of a nationally-recognized apprenticeship program from an organization such as a chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), or a union such as the IBEW, or an equivalent trade organization.
    3. Official mailed test results from the International Code Council indicating a passing score on the Standard Journeyman Electrician or Standard Master Electrician examination.

      Examination must have been taken within three years of the date of application.

      The Standard Journeyman Sign Electrician and the Standard Journeyman Residential Electrician examinations are not acceptable.

    4. A current Clark County, Nevada, Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician ID card.

    Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.

    As a condition of continued employment, employees must acquire and maintain a Nevada Electrical Card as a Master Electrician or Journeyman Electrician within 6 months of the date of appointment.

    Possession of an Explosive Tool Use certificate within 6 months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Forklift Certificate from the City of Las Vegas within 6 months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of an appropriate aerial lift certification from the City of Las Vegas within 6 months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Photovoltaic Installer License issued by the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Nevada OSHA) within 6 months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Fire Alarm certificate within one year of date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
