Summary

This job involves leading a team in fixing and maintaining buildings at a correctional facility on Hawaii Island, including planning work schedules, inspecting repairs, and estimating costs for materials and labor.

It also requires driving vehicles with tanks, so you'll need a special commercial driver's license soon after starting.

This vacancy is with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Institutions Division.

Within six month of hire, the current vacancy requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A, with Endorsement N - Tank vehicles (permanently mounted tank rated greater than 119 gallons, or portable tank rated greater then 1,000 gallons) and no restrictions codes as follows:
  • E (Vehicles equipped with manual transmission)
  • I (Class C vehicle over 18,000 pounds – GVWR)
  • J (Vehicles not equipped with automatic or synchromesh transmission)
  • L (Vehicles equipped with air brakes)
  • O (Class A tractor-trailer combination)
  • Z (Vehicles equipped with full air brakes)

Requirements

Supervises and participates in the repair and maintenance of buildings; in addition to performing skilled building maintenance repair work, plans, lays out, schedules and assigns the work of building maintenance workers from work orders received by supervisors or project managers; instructs subordinates and demonstrates proper work methods; work alongside subordinates to set pace and quality of work; checks and inspect buildings, structures, equipment and facilities for needed repairs; estimates material and labor costs; requisition materials; inspects work in progress and upon completion for proper quality of work; makes oral and written reports of work completed by the crew; and perform other related duties as assigned.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:


Legal Authorization to Work Requirement:

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.


Experience and Training: SIX (6) YEARS of work experience in performing a variety of building maintenance repair work, of which TWO (2) YEARS shall have been as a fully competent worker (journeyworker level), or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL): As stated above, CDL required within six months of hire.

Note: A valid out-of-state CDL may also be accepted. If you are selected for this position, you must transfer your out-of-state CDL to a Hawaii-issued CDL prior to your employment start date. Your Hawaii-issued CDL will be verified by the hiring agency before you can start employment. Please contact the Honolulu CDL Office at (808) 768-4185 for information on how to obtain a Hawaii CDL.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that "....an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who:
(1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
(2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
(3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.
(4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
