Full Job Description

Incumbents of positions in this series weld, braze, heat and cut metals in the repair or maintenance of fixed and movable bridges; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of the work is to maintain and repair bridges using welding.

Requirements

Welds metals using acetylene, electric arc and/or other welding equipment to perform alterations and repairs needed to maintain bridges and structures on, or related to, bridges in a safe and workable condition.

Prepares materials for welding by preheating and cleaning metals and by laying out, cutting and fitting materials according to blueprints, specifications or instructions.

Fabricates miscellaneous metal parts needed for bridge and equipment repairs by cutting, drilling, tapping, brazing and soldering metals using hand and power tools and sheet metal equipment to facilitate the replacement of parts not readily available.

Repairs leaks in metal roofs, walls and ceilings by soldering, crimping, riveting, and welding seams in sheet metal to reduce water damage and restore watertight integrity.

Alters, repairs and maintains motor vehicles, snow removal equipment, etc. by welding damaged parts and by cutting, brazing and riveting sheet metal floorboard replacements in vehicles.

Services equipment by cleaning and repairing hand and power tools and by sharpening and tempering various tools to achieve maximum effectiveness of tools and equipment.

Alters, repairs and maintains masonry on bridges, walls and fence posts in connection with welding functions using appropriate tools and equipment.

Performs related duties such as determining if specific materials can be repaired by welding; erecting and maintaining chain link fences; installing wire reinforcement rods and anchors; and cleaning and lubricating bridge expansion facilities.

Qualifications

2 years of experience in related work.
